Report: No Seahawks will be suspended for postgame melee

On a day of some great football, one ugly moment came in Jacksonville after the Seattle Seahawks blew up the Jaguars’ victory formation, something you rarely see in football.

The Jaguars weren’t happy and a fight ensued. Seahawks defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was ejected for throwing a punch. Seattle defensive end MIchael Bennett was given an unnecessary roughness penalty. It got worse when Seattle’s Quinton Jefferson, who was also ejected, tried to charge into the stands after someone threw a drink on him.

And despite all of the ugliness, there will be no suspensions according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The NFL generally doesn’t suspend players who were ejected, but considering the ejections came in the final seconds after the game was decided, it’s unlikely that factored into the decision.

The NFL doesn’t usually take kindly when there are bad optics from a game — that’s a reason the league handed out suspensions after the Cincinnati Bengals-Pittsburgh Steelers game last week — so it’s surprising there will be no suspensions from that game. The league is still reviewing the incidents, according to Schefter, and it wouldn’t be surprising if there are some fines.

The Jaguars are still trying to find the fans who threw things at Jefferson. Jaguars senior manager of public relations Tad Dickman said the team and authorities are trying to identify those four fans who threw objects. If they’re season-ticket holders, they’ll have their season tickets revoked indefinitely Dickman said. If they bought single-game tickets, they’ll lose the right to buy single-game tickets in the future.
